| Jury Tampering | The word Tamper means to make improper or secret arrangements. An example of this definition is tampering with a jury. It is a very serious offense and is punished with jail time. This could include paying off a juror, and giving a juror gifts. The juror then causes a "hung" or undecided jury and the trial is acquited. Also gifts can be given after the trial. This is not necessarily tampering but it may encourage jurors in the future to acquit a trial. John Gotti and Don King are two very famous people that have tampered with juries. The only difference between the two is that John Gotti did it illegaly before the trial and Don King did it legally after the trial. | |||||||||||||||||||

John Gotti is the boss of the Gambino Crime Family. He is extremely famous and loved by many people. On June 23, 1992 he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Jury found him guilty on all 14 charges of the indictment including murder. This was not always the case though. Gotti was taken to trial three times before and was acquited all three times. It was found that Gotti had paid off one juror that led to a hung jury. The trial was declared a mistrial and he was aqcuited. | Don King |
Don King is the most famous boxing promoter of all time. He has represented some of the most talented boxers such as Ali and Tyson and was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997. He has been in trouble with the law many times but has not served substantial jail time. He usually is found not guilty. Don King, being the gentleman that he is, thanks each juror not only by shaking their hands after the trial but also by awarding a vacation package to every juror. This type of tampering is not illegal and does not change the outcome of this trial. It may encourage future juries to find him not guilty because they will recieve a vacation in return. | |||||||||||||||||||
